I hope I am not confusing things here ... My lucid 32 bit system (up to date) suffered from the same problem. I'm creating presentations for my lectures so it's a bit silly not being able to use a true fullscreen presentation mode.
Now, I decided to remove the Ubuntu version of OO3.2 and installed the debs for OO3.2 from the OO website. These seemed to work in conjunction with compiz. Must check it again, though, to be sure.
