I have the same problem in Karmic official version (upgraded from Jaunty). To reprocude:
1- Create a new document in openoffice.
2- Insert a new note (Ctrl+Alt+N)
3- Write "abc"
4- Press save as MS Word 97/2000/XP
It consistently caches for me.
I don't recall having this problem in Jaunty.
