Even though "upstream" appears in the title of this bug I can't seem to find a link to an upstream bug report. Is there an upstream report?
I have had this issue for several years and can confirm its also occurs in Lucid 32-bit. Disabling anti-aliasing as described in #27 makes the problem disappear but leaves text looking very ugly.
