This is almost certainly a bug in virtkey being triggered by your keyboard layout. This is fixed in Gutsy or you can use the feisty packages below.

Add the below to your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/onboard/ubuntu feisty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/onboard/ubuntu feisty main
