It seems I just ran into this problem on Ubuntu 12.04 (final beta) with nvidia's binary drivers v295.40, using XFCE. Geany would randomly become extremely slow, sometimes taking seconds to update the text view. Whenever this happened, Xorg used 60-100% CPU. Switching off subpixel rendering in XFCE's display settings fixed it.
