I have not seen any instability issues with the new beta driver 260.19.06 in my maverick 64-bit setup.
The sluggishness issue is completely gone and also gnome-shell works fluently now.
Note also that the X updates lucid build cannot be installed on maverick.
The lucid package nvidia-current provides virtual package xserver-xorg-video-6, which would break mavericks xserver 1.9.
The maverick package nvidia-current provides virtual package xserver-xorg-video-8, suitable for xserver 1.9.
Note also, that this is the way it should be.
