in the past few hours we have had some fixing about apt too, so there is some hope about better conf.
i've made some more tweaks: purging/reinstalling gdm plymouth jockey apt-xapian and updating packages ( my issues are only with maverick) . The mountall package seem to be related with our problem (see the comments in the above link).
On my end, the situation seem to be better since the latest apt & mountall upgrades: after this install i've rebooted, logged only 1 time as it might, no crash, so i'm waiting to see what happen now before commenting again.

Xorg.0.log looks to me like a Enter key crash on VT1, but when you booted without the splash or quiet parameters. I assume you didn't see a splash screen that time (plymouth would still run, I believe). Good confirming log. ****
you are right, it was only a gdm fallback asking to log again, no more.
