I can't agree more.
For me, Linux has always been about customization. I understand that default settings are made for new users, but there should always be a way to customize them, be it through gconf-editor or something else.
I've been using Ubuntu since Hoary, and I really don't like the "do it the way I decided" direction it's taking.
