They're trying to make a better desktop experience. Even if none of us like what they're doing, they're trying to make it better for us. Some of their reasons were pretty interesting, and I had never heard some of them. Thankfully, we have Julien's fix to hold us through until we get the ability to customize notify-OSD. That's my biggest complaint right now, and this would fix so many complaints with people.
