Steve, I tried out nfs-common 1:1.2.0-4ubuntu4.2 from lucid-proposed (as referenced in bug 811823), and it works fine for me.
My problem was caused by a race condition with the rpc_pipefs dependency (as verified by adding a sleep in rpc_pipefs.conf), so this will obviously fix this problem.
