An addition to my previous post:

No changes to my statements concerning nm-applet.
But the problem with knetworkmanager (or plasma networkmanager applet)
can be avoided. Just in case somebody is interested:

As I learned, there are two types of connections, user and system.
With a system connection, any authorized user can start/stop it,
and it persists if the user that started it logs out.

The default seems to be user. On my jaunty installation,
the system option (allow other users) is greyed out or invisible,
depending on the tool being used, even for the user that has administrative privileges.
Under kde4, I could not find any tool for creating a system connection.
But under gnome, the nm-editor (I think) has this option.
Having to start a gnome session for this is annoying, but it works.
