Comment 113 for bug 279262

Maverick-Natty upgrade; device unmanaged - confirmed; but in my case although network manager claims I have no active connections I fortunately I did. I commented out the unmanaged interface in /etc/network/interfaces then had to run network tools; select the unmanaged interface; then I was able to enable and manage the interface in the network app.
