Bug Description

Binary package hint: main-menu

In the Karmic Netbook Remix Alpha 5 (installed on a Medion Akoya 1210),

When changing the menubar icon of an item, it does show up, but when adding the selected item to the Favorites bar, it shows the original icon instead of the new one.

This was tested with different png, jpeg and tiff images with resolutions 32x32, 64x64, 128x128. Its quite annoying because much icons in the netbook menu are too blurry or low-res.

main-menu is an installer component, not anything to do with UNR. I don't know the exact package name where this belongs, but I'm reassigning to unr-meta for the time being as those guys will probably know.

affects: main-menu (Ubuntu) → unr-meta (Ubuntu)

Could you please describe exactly what steps you took to reproduce this, and what the expected outcome would have been? A screenshot would also be helpful if you could provide it. I suspect that you are trying to change the icon theme and seeing it immediately picked up in window-picker-applet, but not in netbook-launcher, is that correct? Netbook launcher will pick up the icon theme change I think, but only loads it when it comes up, so you would have to logout/login to see it take effect.

In alacarte (System->Preferences->Main Menu), change the default icon of any launcher to have a custom icon. The icon displays correctly in the desktop-launcher with the new custom icon. After clicking on the "+" of the launcher that was modified, the launcher item is added to the "Favorites" menu. Unfortunately, the custom modification of the icon does not get saved when it got moved to "Favorites". Instead it retains the icon of the original launcher.

Logging in and out, restarting GDM, nor rebooting changes the display of the icon. The icons that existed when the .desktop file or .deb package was installed is the icon that shows up in the "favorites" menu. The expectation is that the customisation that was made in alacarte would have also changed when launcher item was added to "favorites".

Here are screenshots of the same item in "Other" and "Favorites". In "Other" tha custom icon (an svg) shows correctly. Under "Favorites" the default icon is shown instead. That happened after upgrading to Karmic.

I can confirm this. App icons added to favorites are scaled rather than native resolution despite changing the icon using the main menu editor as detailed in the original bug report.

I can confirm this problem too. I changed (System->Preferences->Main Menu) the icon of Thunderbird and this new icon is used from now on in the "internet" section. But when I add Thunderbird to my favorites, the old icon is used in the "favorites" section. However, in the "internet" section the new icon is still used.

Forgive me if this is not the right place, but I have this same issue in Karmic Netbook Remix after it has been released (updated as of today, 1/31/10). I think I found a workaround, or at least a place to start looking.

I am rather new to Ubuntu, so if there's more info to be had, let me know what to post.

I was poking around in gconf-editor for the netbook-launcher settings and noticed that for the new shortcuts I had created in (System -> Preferences -> Main Menu), and then added to Favorites, the desktop_file key pointed to /home/(user)/.local/share/applications/alacarte-made.desktop

When I looked at the file in Terminal (cat /home/(user)/.local/share/applications/alacarte-made.desktop) here's what I got:

#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Terminal=true
Icon[en_US]=(path to custom logo)
Name[en_US]=(Shortcut Name)
Exec=(Shortcut executable)
Name=(Shortcut Name)
Icon=gnome-panel-launcher

Notice the Icon and Icon[en_US]? The icons were not the same there. I changed the Icon value to match Icon[en_US] value and logged out/in and it works! Custom icon in Favorites menu!

So it appears that either netbook-launcher is not looking at the Icon[en_US], or that alacarte isn't updating both values. Dunno which one is non-compliant.

Cheers,

Nik

confirming this in lucid(although it has the same version as karmic (atm)). And also in my case I had to restart netbook launcher to see the change in the default icon(that might be another bug?)

I don't think this is exactly a duplicate. Yes, restarting netbook-launcher refreshes the new custom icons in the Main Menu folders (Applications, Games, Internet, etc.) per bug 283914, but restarting netbook-launcher does *not* cause the Favorites custom icons to update.

I think this is still a separate issue that has something to do with reading the right line in the .desktop file.

I had the same problem: What I did to come across this is I change the icon in the menu editor it doesn't do anythig to the icon used in favorites.

My research shows that the problem is that the .desktop files created for the favorites menu ( in ~/.local/share/applications) ONLY set the Icon[en-us]=/path/of/my/new/icon it does NOT however also edit the Icon=/path/to/old/icon

I think toomanyplugs found the same thing.

Hope that someone fixes this, because it really looks UGLY (especially when you make prism apps, and all it shows up as the launcher icon, YUCK)

The bug is always present in Lucid UNE with up to date packages.
When I change an icon with "alacarte" menu editor, the icon in Favorites remains the original one.

Nota : In my configuration this bug is not related to bug #505600. If I change the icon name, after a logout / login, the new name appears in Favorites menu.

Dave Gluss (dgluss) wrote :

The problem is that in the menu file (e.g. .local/share/applications/alacarte-made-3.desktop) has multiple entries for the icon. Changing the icon in alacarte changes the "Icon[en_US]" entry, which appears in the original menu...that works OK. However in the Favorites folder the "Icon" entry is picked up...if you change that by hand, then the correct icon appears in the Favorites folder.

I notice, parenthetically, that there's a similar situation with "Name[en_US]" and "Name" and that's probably the cause of bug 505600.
