I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper, on several machines. I just received my new Mini 10V (with Dell installed Hardy) yesterday. Sure enough, the Nautilus background color keeps switching to black on me (and yes, occasionally mauve) no matter how often I reset it to white via Backgrounds and Emblems. Black is nasty because all the text disappears. However if I switch to View As List all is well and in fact I can then switch back to View As Icons and I have my white background back. Simply minimizing the window and re-maximizing it does not help, neither does resizing or moving it. Closing it and reopening it gives random results, much like opening it in the first place.

Unfortunately the first thing I did when I booted my new 10V was to get the updates, so I'm afraid I couldn't tell you if this behaviour was present before then.
