Following my report, I used the command line to get root privilege and
then succeeded in blanking the dvd with "dvd+rw-format" command. I was
then able to write my new back-up.

This all seems logical but it does mean that nautilus can write but not
allow you to obtain root privilege to eliminate old data. Getting out of
this loop seems awkward and what is required is a request for a password
by nautilus when it comes across a root protected file to erase.
