I used to experience this problem with my previous i386 PC which had a Pioneer DVD reader-writer. The problem never went away.
I am now on an AMD 64 machine with an ASUS DVD reader-writer and am running Jaunty. There is no problem now.
It would perhaps be useful if you stated your brand and model of DVD reader-writer. I think that this problem arises with certain brand/model combinations of CD/DVD reader-writers and their device-level interactions with the kernel.
