Booting with all_generic_ide=1 as a boot option does not change things.
I inserted a blank CD-R into the Pioneer drive and while the green LED
lights up all the time, I do not get any response about a blank medium
found in the drive. Please see my report dated 25 Jul 08 at:

FYI, I have cut and pasted from dmesg what I think might be relevant,
after inserting a blank CD:

Do I need to run the second kernel in a VirtualBox VM? I have experience
building from Ibex source package in prevu for applications, and running
them, but never building a new kernel, let alone run it. If given a link
on how to do it, I am willing to try, because I want to see the back of
this bug.

Many thanks for your attention.
