Thanks for your comment Dave! Fortunately in Mantic the d/rules for multipath-tools was overhauled and doesn't call nearly as many manual steps, and now uses compat version 13, so a big improvement in my books.

For LL/JJ/FF I don't think we should change the compat version in an SRU, so we don't need to consider that, but it's definitely useful to keep in mind.
