Unfortunately "sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-restricted-extras" or Synaptic 'Mark for Removal' etc is a bit like throwing out the baby with the dirty bath water, as it removes a lot of other useful things that work OK, but "sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer" removes just the offending package that otherwise perpetuates a rejection cycle when trying to add other packages.
