Thanks for pointing me at that. Looking at the bug report and related forum discussions I agree my upgrade to 9.10 has two separate issues - this ttf-mscorefonts one and the IPv6 DNS lookups. Naively I had assumed I had just one set of related problems - it is worse than I thought... sigh!
