I just got a bunch of updates, and as far as I can tell one of the updates seem to fix this issue for me, clicking on the "applications" icon no longer results in an endless restarting loop.
markus@markus-laptop:~$ apt-cache policy unity unity: Installed: 0.2.28-0ubuntu3 Candidate: 0.2.28-0ubuntu3 Version table: *** 0.2.28-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Also, my .xsession-errors no longer contains dbus timeout messages.
