Bug Description

The live cd for the Maverick release won't boot. Instead it just shows the following message:

"graphics initialization failed
Error setting up gfxboot
boot:"

Hitting enter at this point simply brings up the message "Loading bootlogo..." briefly only to go back to the previous message.

The machine is an Intel Pentium M --Centrino laptop. The cd boots correctly in other pcs --checked media successfully.

Dear Ricardo,

Have you tried booting into safe graphics mode?

Hi Darran,

Thanks for your reply. I can't boot into safe graphics mode since no such option is given. I should've mentioned but pressing the F keys won't help and no boot menu is displayed at all. I think it breaks up when attempting to do just that. It does however allow me to type in commands at the boot: prompt, I just couldn't find any that worked.

Ricardo

Same bug in 12.04 with Intel M processor, in addition to no PAE issue -

Got a non PAE version here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/930447/comments/84

I installed using the option on Ubuntu site to install to a USB using USB universal installer and one of last settings to use a new unlabelled linux as I tired of burning CD`s and DVD`s that would not boot.

Still had the Graphics error, but typing help at the error brought up a screen of F key listings - but they did not work

Giving up after trying these I pressed the enter key a couple times and Ubuntu screen loaded to my surprise.

My next step if this had not worked was to switch to Mint or Debian - this really was too difficult

I neglected to mention I had also tried the mini 12.04 install which was supposed to be non PAE and text based but did not appear to be but it may have been my error in not formatting the usb drive - the first time I tried with the non pae version of Ubuntu desktop linked above I still got the pae error - after formatting the usb first then installing the pae error disappeared but I did have to use the procedure of typing help to get past the graphics error.

On a Dell Inspiron 8200 with Nvidia NV17 (64MB) graphics, I encountered the same problem trying to boot Ubuntu or Lubuntu Saucy (13.10) Live discs.

Entering 'help' at the boot: prompt produced a special boot menu, but below the menu there was an option to simply press Enter to boot. Doing that resulted in booting to the Live desktop *without* the usual two menu screens where I choose my Language and then choose to Try *buntu Without Installing.
