Just tried on lucid:
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.35-2.6.32-25-generic_2.6.32-25.24_amd64
This backported rt2800pci works perfectly fine in ad hoc WEP mode (21.3 Mbits/sec with iperf).
