I believe for that old Mac you do need amd64+mac ISO image of Ubuntu.
Note that these are no longer produced. Alternatively, to install
without UEFI you do need to invoke legacy boot (bootcamp/windows)
procedure to install amd64 image using PC-BIOS emulation.
