Found a strange solution, works for me now a couple of days
After desperate attempts I left my laptop on for a couple of hours. The battery ran out of power.
After connecting it to the main power supply, the screen started up normal!
Later, after some startup changes, the problem was back.
But after temporary removing my battery (complete off power) the screen starts up normal, in correct resolution.
Finally I can use this laptop with Ubuntu 10.10, and I think I can reproduce the solution when I need it in times of trouble.
I did not change any startup settings for a couple of days now, and still it starts up normal.
