Vanilla 2.6.36-rc4 (from kernel.org) (partly) fixes this issue (at least on my machine): After switching to a console and back to X11, display is working as expected.
However, there still seems minor gitches: Before rc4, I used the vesa driver (configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) together with 'nomodeset' as work-around. However with rc4, I can't use it with rc4 (blank screen, with and without 'nomodeset').
