With stock boot params "quiet splash", the backlight comes on, but the screen is black almost immediately after hitting return in grub2. I can hear the GNOME sound when gdm starts up, so the machine is still running, but the screen stays black.

With boot param i915.modeset=0 I can see the kernel message text until X starts, then the screen goes black with the backlight still on, but the kernel panics and I see the two flashing numlock and capslock lights blinking. Machine is unresponsive.

The only kernel that allows me to boot into X so far is linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic-pae. All newer kernels exhibit the same behavior described above.
