My problem is still current - I can only boot into a working X desktop if I add
"i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa"
to the grub boot command. Sometimes the screen is garbled at the login prompt and I need to CTRL-ALT-F1, login to the shell, restart gdm, then logout again, at which point the screen is legible.
I'm presently trying to manually write an xorg.conf file to allow me to use 1280x800 in vesa, but so far no luck. When I type
"xandr -q" the output is
1024x768 0.0*
800x600 0.0
640x480 0.0
Any idea as to how I can change the screen resolution?
I can't believe the original issue hasn't been fixed!
