Alex, thanks. Could you try the following:
1) Install Maverick
2) Install daily ALSA snapshot https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
3) Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf <--- this line is new compared to the previous instruction
options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad
4) Reboot
5) Try again and indicate independently whether
 - headphones are working
 - internal mic is working
 - external mic is working
6) Supply an alsa-info

Sorry if I'm causing work for you by asking you to test again and again; it's a little difficult to do remote debugging on this one, so an option could be to ship the machine to me.
