Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-16-generic

i am trying to do an upgrade of the kernel just using sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get upgrade and it fails trying to install the new kernel. NOt sure why, any help would be appreciated. i had the same issue with the -15-generic kernel and I posted about it here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1277389

i followed all the instructions for what log files I should attach but it only allows one attachment so I had to archive them together and attach that. hope that's ok.

The problem can be solved by doing:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get -f install
$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo apt-get autoclean
then $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

if you have got any error:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo update-grub
$ sudo apt-get -f install
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I tried the commands and it still is giving me sort of what looks like an
error. I have attached a text file that is a transcript of my terminal
session. First I ran through the first block, then because I got an error I
ran through the second and also got an error. I get errors on the commands
sudo apt-get -f install and $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. I get error code
17 not 2, I think I may have filled this under the wrong bug (I am not the
most Linux savvy person but I am working on it). I am also concerned that
is not really a bug and that I just wrecked my distro (or at least my
packages). I do not know if I mentioned this in earlier emails but I have
the Nvidea proprietary drivers installed (ver185) and I think this may be
causing problems. I was doing some research online and it seemed like
others were having problems caused by it. Ii get the error on updates but
the updates go through and my software is installed so it is not a major
problem, just an annoyance. Thanks for your help and I appreciate any
further advice. I just want to make sure my problems aren't caused my one
doing and that I am wasting your time when you need to fix real bugs, I am a
developer myself(.Net Web) so I know what is it like to be fixing an issue
that has nothing to do with what you are supposed to be fixing because the
user made a mistake and reported it incorrectly.

it looks like it fell back to 2.6.31-14-generic after I removed the others
it seems to be having trouble with updating initramfs, I did some research
on line to try to figure it out myself. I took a look at the file
"initrd.img" in root and it is showing up in Nautilus as a broken symbolic
link. Do you think my Nvidea driver is causing it to fail on update? I am
sure there are other possible reason as well that I don't know about. I am
considering turning of the driver and running the commands again, do you
think that will help?

32 I think. Pasted the output of the commands you wanted me to run below.
I think I might have fixed the problem. I ran apt-get install --reinstall
linux-image-generic linux-generic and did not get an error. I ran uname -r
and got this:
jason@jason-laptop-ubuntu:~$ uname -r
2.6.31-19-generic
so I think it may have updated. maybe that is what caused my graphics
drivers to get disabled the other day when I emailed you last. I will try
to run an update an see what happends.

Better to just do a clean install for this. thanks for your help anyway.
Karmic is an LTS release so I think it would be a good idea to reinstall on
this release.
