Bug Description

This is the master tracking bug for ath5k driver connection and performance issues on IBM hardware running the latest Karmic 9.10 release. Please only post relevant debug information which will help developers track down the root cause of this issue. This means no ranting or comments to the affect of "me too's".

If you are affected by this issue using the ath5k driver on IBM hardware please be sure to verify the following before posting a comment or adding information:

1) Confirm this remains with the Karmic 9.10 release candidate or final release
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/
2) Confirm if this remains after having installed and tested with linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic
    sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic
3) If possible, also test and confirm with the latest upstream compat-wireless stack, this will allow for additional upstream developers to help examine this issue:
    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download

If step 1, 2, or 3 resolves this issue, please let us know. If you still can confirm this issue after steps 1 and 2, please post a comment describing the issue you are seeing and also be sure to run the following command which will automatically gather and attach relevant debug information:

apport-collect -p linux 461419

Attached log files via apport-collect as requested after steps 1 and 2.

I can't connect at all to my home WPA-Personal AP. I could not get any better results by getting closer to the signal. AFAIK, I was using madwifi under Jaunty on the same hardware, and despite a slow rate that I thought was due to the old 802.11b adapter, it was reliable. I have a rt2870sta USB dongle which had a similar symptom (association to the AP failing); installing linux-backports-modules fixed the problem for it, but not for the built-in adapter.

The same hardware at the exact same distance from the AP works just fine in Win7. If I had no USB dongle, this would be a showstopper for me.

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Triaged

I found some other connection bugs with unencrypted networks. Have marked those as dups of this one. Also removed the Thinkpad reference as there are Toshiba and other hardware but all links back to ath5k.

Christiansen (happylinux) wrote : Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

The apport-collect above was collected using the Karmic RC Live CD and default ath5k module from the linux-image. Connectionspeed was checked several times using the ISPs reliable internet speed test, and the result was less than 256Kbit/ps downspeed and very unstable - link was checked to more than 2 Mbit/ps with an other Kubuntu 8.04 with the default ath_pci module loaded, this was done in between the Karmic RC tests - The boxes was connected to the AP one at a time, and no other access for other client boxes was allowed.

The LBM was tested on an new installed Karmic RC fra the same live CD and on the same box, and was updatet with all updates including the the LBM. The test results was even worse than with the default ath5k module.

A test on an enterprise Cisco WiFi network was done too with the same box, and the connection speed was even less than with the default module and wireless stack.
Compiling an ath-pci module from source (Ver. 10.0.5.6), and loading the module on the other hand showed the expected connection speed on the enterprise network, which is approximately 18.000 Kbit/ps (18 Mbps effective on a 54G network).

I will try to go on to step 3 later this night, and report back if I succeed.

Successfully compiled the the wireless-compat stack dated 2009-10-27, and loaded the ath5k module without any errors seen in dmesg. Ran a connection speed test and got same result as with the LBM module, rebooted and reran the test with same bad result. So unfortunately it seems like the bug is still present in the latest modules too.
Modules loaded after "sudo make install" was:
ath5k 122372 0
mac80211 210508 1 ath5k
ath 8828 1 ath5k
cfg80211 131048 3 ath5k,mac80211,ath
led_class 4096 2 ath5k,thinkpad_acpi

BTW Removed some noise from a wired connection from the earlier attached WifiSyslog.txt and reattached.
Seems too that this "apport-collect" spams the bug-subscribers inboxes, isn't this at little inconvenient ?

Is it wise that we lump under one bug connection speed issues and complete inability to connect at all? They seem not obviously the same issue.

I'm on Karmic Beta
I recently installed linux-backports-modules-karmic and I'm on a Thinkpad T60

@Max Bowsher (Comment #43), I agree that the failure to connect at all vs poor connection speeds are two different issues. Based on some of the test and debug information posted here I've opened two new separate bugs on the behalf of users @bjaglin (who's unable to connect with an Atheros AR5211 - bug 463581) and @Christainsen (witnessing poor connection speeds on an Atheros AR5212 - bug 463625).

@bjaglin and @Christiansen, I've taken the liberty to subscribe you to the new bugs I opened on your behalf containing the relevant information you posted here. I'll follow up with each of you at the new bugs. Thanks!

@Julius Thor (#46) Any chance that you would kindly post a "sudo lspci -vvnn" for your Atheros card, I'm very curious if it exactly the same as Lenove used in the R60 models I'm using for my testing. What encryption type are you using (none, wep, wpa, wpa2 and personal or enterprice etc.) on the connection giving the good performance, and what type of access point or wifi-router. I'm asking as I've tried several different combinations, just to find if the root cause could be anything other than the ath5k module....REALLY Curious, and thanks in advance.

@ Leann Ogasawara (#47) Fine with me, I'm ready to supply whatever info can help solve the issue.

Have to mention that right now I'm using a friends older ThinkPad with an IBM Atheros adapter, running at full speed and no drops at all. Using a Karmic final release and running right from the live CD. The adapter is PCI ID:

Vidar Hoel (vidar-hoel) wrote : Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 (i386) on my IBM ThinkPad T42. Wireless (WPA2 PSK) did work, but the connection dropped randomly under load (Reconnected to my AP at least one time pr 2 minutes).

Did step 2, rebooted, and it now works. I have downloaded gigabytes of data and the connection has not dropped once!

So: Step 2 was a bug-fixer for me!

I would be nice if you could supply us with a "sudo lspci -vvnn", as there is more than one Atheros based adapter for the ThinkPad T40 series.
From all the logs above there seems to be two types Atheros adapters suffering from this issue, a Philips branded and a IBM and Lenovo branded ThinkPad adapter. Some Atheros adapters manufactured between those ones, maybe yours, seems to work a lot better. I've just tested the later with all tree steps, and it still doesn't work (WPA2/AES and PSK)
  Thanks in advance.

Thanks, You are having the exact Philips adapter I was referring to earlier : PCI-ID [168c:0012] sub [17ab:8310]. This one only works perfect with the madwifi "ath_pci" driver module, not provided from Ubuntu any more. And from all the logs above, doesn't seem to work with the ath5k kernel driver module, the only module provided in 9.10/Karmic. From your lspci output it seems you are running the well performing madwifi module (Kernel driver in use: ath_pci), self-compiled or back on 9.04/Jaunty ?

@ Vidar Hoel
Thanks, You are having an atheros based adapter used in some T40 and R50 series : PCI-ID [168c:1014] sub [1014:057e], which seems to perform well with the ath5k kernel driver modules - in my experience the default drivers from the linux-image package works quiet well with the [1014:057e] adapter, but it could be that the backports-modules works even better - I will try the backports next time I install T40/R50 series.

Yes, I'm using the self-compiled madwifi-driver with Karmic. It seems to work very well. ath5k does not work at all.

Have you tried linux-backports-modules-karmic? I believe I have the same Philips adapter(It's atleast a Philips adapter) on my T41p and it works pretty well with ath5k. Same result with my T60 which had horrible connectivity using ath5k until I installed the backport package.
Before I installed linux-backports-modules-karmic I used ath_pci on both laptops.

No luck with that one either. Madwifi seems to be only driver working at the moment.

This started working for the first time out of the box in Jaunty on this laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L25-S121. I did an in-place upgrade to karmic a couple of days after release and have applied all security updates as they became available in the update manager.

Finally, I followed all 3 steps , but still failed.
At last, I use Madwifi driver to connect my wifi.
Here is my reference site : http://dimitar.me/?p=616.
Hope Ubuntu can fix this critical bug soon.

The symptoms I am seeing after having completed step two are transfer rate drops to zero (which can last up to 20 seconds), very low transfer rates (no more than 2 or 3 kb per second for several minutes) and overall very heavy spikes (transfer rate drops from 2 mb to 50 kb then goes up again - this cycle can last half an hour before the transfer rate normalizes - it usually becomes a lot better after reconnecting to the wireless network).

I too hope that this bug can be fixed VERY soon, since my brain already started thinking about installing MS Windows again, which is something I really would want to avoid if possible, but this bug is persevering now for such a long time, that it is starting to feel, it will never get fixed.

This is not meant as devaluing the wonderful work of the developers, but a bug like this can do this to you after a few months with unreliable internet access - things like internet telephone and sometimes even chat are important for me and not really a good idea half the time because of the heavy up-down spikes :-(

However, my another T60 with Atheros AR5212, works excellent with Ath5k.
I found T60 with Ath5k has faster connection and strong signal.
Hope this AR5211 bug could be fixed right away.

@davidyu,
Could you please post a "sudo lspci -vvnn" and a "dmesg | grep -i phy" from your working T60, there are still R/T60 with AR5212 based adapters not working without using the madwifi driver. What encryption are you using ?
  Thanks in advance.

Thanks, it seems you are using the same type of adapter for your T60, as I am having bad experience with on more ThinkPads from the R-series, and that too have been reported not working above. What is different is that you are probably using a Certificate (LEAP) and WPA or WPA2 Enterprice right ? - where my bad experiences with this adapter type (and the ath5k module) is based primarily on WPA and WPA2 Personal or Webbased auth. on an Enterprise Cisco network and partly WPA/WPA2 Personal on different types of other SMB/home routers. From this I wonder if the bug could be related to an issue with the supplicant instead, and I try to see if I'm able get expected performance with a WPA/WPA2 Enterprice setup.
Are you able to get normal max speed (for 54G) around 18 to 22 Mbps (download) on your setup, or just as I experience less than 1 to 2 Mbps ?

You could have a look at Bug #463625, as this is about the exact same ThinkPad adapter you are experiencing problems with:

$ sudo lspci -vvnn
03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC [168c:1014] (rev 01)
 Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:058a]

This bug has a upstream kernel bug attached, and I think some backing on both is needed, if this bug should ever be taken serious. Even though bug-description mentions poor connection speed as an issue, latest ubuntu updates or kernels seems to make connections nearly impossible depending on the distance to the AP - if less than 2-3 meters connecting in rear cases is possible, depending on things like the amount of noise from other nearby WiFi networks.

I have filed a bug upstream directly to the kernel, hopefully this will be looked into. You can make comments and track it at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15079 . Adding upstream watch.

Christiansen (happylinux) wrote : Re: [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

Finaly I think I've found a break through on the problem of certain ThinkPad adapters (MAC:0xa3, PHY: 0x61) recorded in this tread, regarding the issue that they doesn't work with the default ath5k module installed by *buntu. While trying to capture communication between the adapter and a AP, I changed channel of the AP from a high channel to a rather low one. Suddenly I was able to connect and transfer bandwidth was now perfect (above 18 Mbps). After further testing I've found that using channel 1 to 6 on the AP if okay, using channel 7 and 8 was somewhat suspicious, and channel 9 to 13 was unusable.

So if you still experience the connection/performance issue and you have configuration access to your AP, you could try changing the channel to one between 1 and 6 (or 2.412 and 2.437 Mhz). This issue only concerns this particular adapter, while other Atheros adapters types I've used do not suffer from this excact issue.

Find if your driver is "ath5k" using : "lsmod | grep ath"
Find if your chipset is "MAC:0xa3 and PHY: 0x61" executing : "dmesg | grep -i phy"
Find what frequency in Mhz is used when connected : "nm-tool"

Please let us know if this solved the problem for you - thanks in advance.

Julius Thor (joolli) wrote : Re: [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

I just acquired an IBM Thinkpad T42p laptop and the ath5k driver is unusable with the miniPCI I have installed in the system. It is actually a Philips adapter from a T40p but that shouldn't matter. I'm on Lucid Lynx beta and I tried all stages as described above.

I installed:
linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic

which installed this package:
linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-18-generic

ath5k did not connect after doing that so I tried installing bleeding edge compat wireless.
This is the tarball I used:
compat-wireless-2010-03-28

lspci -vvnn:

 Kernel driver in use: ath_pci
 Kernel modules: ath_pci, ath5k

As you can see, I'm using ath_pci to be able to connect to the Internet. Even with that driver the connectivity is rather bad (20-30% signal strength at 11Mbps). It stops working randomly so I have to re-associate to get connectivity back. Just on my right here is a T60 with this card:

Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC [168c:1014] (rev 01)
 Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:057e]

Which is the same card as mentioned in the bug description.
The T60 has a stable connection with 55-70% signal strength at 48Mbps.

I hope that helps. I can provide apport information if you require it.

Had some success today in Lucid. Booted the system and the "Enable Wireless" option was available in the Network Manager applet. Disabled it, and re-enabled it and it worked for about 2 minutes. Will attach apport logs, may be something in there somewhere. AR5001 chip.

I installed the madwifi drivers from "Hardware Drivers" and rebooted and the adapter was showing in iwconfig, but could not connect either through the Network Manager applet or manually with iwconfig. BUT...removing madwifi and rebooting again gained some results.
I can now connect to my AP but it is very intermittent and drops out as above but can browse for about 2 minutes now! Getting there...

For me, changing to lucid has worsened the performance. The zero-drops of connection speed (and I mean zero) are more frequent (like two times every minute or something like that) and the speed overall is worse as well.

Are we supposed to install the lucid backport package? I tried and so far it seems the signal is displayed to be a bit stronger (like 8-10 %) than with pure lucid but the actual performance looks unchanged worse than in karmic with karmic backports....

I have to ask; since the first bug was filed, has there only been one card fixed? Am I the only one finding this absolutely pathetic?

Ok, this card that got fixed has seen quite an improvement (I know because I have that card) but what about the other very common card AR5211. That card has been completely broken for years. It barely connects with ath_pci (and of course that driver causes kernel panics) and has been removed from Ubuntu and ath5k doesn't connect at all even with the computer next to the router. Both ath5k and ath_pci are so bad that I even resorted to ndiswrapper, which performed better but caused even more frequent lockups than ath_pci.

IBM Thinkpad T40-43 are very common laptops and the fact that AR5211 does not work is quite a bad situation as it's embedded in many of these laptops. Laptops which many people use, after they have bought a new one, to test Linux for the first time.

Can anyone answer why there seems to be no work done on that card? Is Atheros not interested in fixing the driver for that card or what? It would be nice to know because then I would know if I should throw that piece of junk AR5211 away and buy an Intel card, or not.

Best regards

Some extra info : The same laptop booted on Vista ( I know, i know) does not have this problem. So is not the hardware, it has to have something to do with the driver.

I was having random and frequent freezes/crashes with 2.6.32-22-generic lucid and network manager on my t41p with ar5212 chipset.
I removed network manager and installed wicd. That seems to have got rid of freezes crashes. But then it would connect fine at home with a wap2 ap but not at a friends place with a normal non encrypted ap. It would just not see any wireless network.

Going to command line and doing the following as root fixed it.
# to view available wireless
iwlist wlan0 scan
# to connect to a an ap ssid1
iwconfig wlan0 essid ssid1
# to get ip address
dhclient3 wlan0 &

The upstream bug report has not been updated for over 6 weeks. To ensure that this is fixed, can ALL affected users please make sure that you have selected "Affects me too" at the top of the bug report, underneath the bug title. Also if you have any debugging information, add it and add a note to the upstream tracker as this should help push the bugfix process through.

On another note, I can also confirm that this affects several other Linux distros, namely Mandriva, Fedora, Sabayon, Gentoo, Linux Mint, etc, on both i386 and amd64, so the sooner this is fixed the better for everyone :)

I would suggest that users affected first try out one of the latest compat-wireless module before marking this bug, as there has been a lot of changes to the ath5k module in the last month or so. And despite completely silence from the devs on the bug rapports, this has solved at least the problems I was experiencing - using the compat-wireless-2010-05-22.tar.bz2 and running ./scripts/driver-select ath5k before compiling.

Your absolutely right, and maybe some other users aren't too, if they give latest compat-wireless modules a go - hence "I would suggest that users affected first try out one of the latest compat-wireless module before marking this bug". Sorry if that is to hard to get, that there would then be a solution upstream, that could be used as an solution/update to ubuntu.

Installed the compat-wireless package (from end of May). It now takes minutes instead of seconds to connect to the wireless network (and therefore several manual retrials) - error message is simple try1-3 and then timeout.

After a few minutes the connection suddenly works usually and then the dmesg output gets really strange with several cfg80211: World regulatory domain updated: - messages, I don't understand and never saw before.

The good part is, the connection is stable (at least the applet does not indicate a reconnection) but the connection still comes to a halt sometimes (once or twice a minute usually for a few seconds) - it feels better, anyway, thanks for that work!

System-upgrades (like today with open-office-updates) lead to time-outs in the update-GUI nontheless. So still not entirely there but it is finally at least getting a bit better since the connection does not drop out anymore.

I attached an example of the dmesg log.

This is a patch that was in the upstream bug report which appears to fix the problem for the users that have tested it. Leann, is there any chance we can get this into Ubuntu before Maverick is released?

I second that. The patch fixed my problem as well, even though I only used it to disable L0S, not L1. Recent compat-wireless doesn't compile for the latest lucid kernel (due to the wext refactoring thing), but with 2.6.35-4-generic from maverick it works perfectly.

Hi Teej,

I see this patch has been submitted to the upstream mailing list for consideration already:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.wireless.general/51512

It's however still undergoing modification and review it seems and has not yet been applied. It's the preferred policy of the Ubuntu kernel team for patches to be accepted upstream first and then be pulled back into Ubuntu. Otherwise maintaining out of tree patches causes quite a bit of a maintenance burden. I'll try to keep an eye on the progress the patch makes, but feel free to ping me if you notice it is accepted upstream before I do. Thanks.
