You could have a look at Bug #463625, as this is about the exact same ThinkPad adapter you are experiencing problems with:

This bug has a upstream kernel bug attached, and I think some backing on both is needed, if this bug should ever be taken serious. Even though bug-description mentions poor connection speed as an issue, latest ubuntu updates or kernels seems to make connections nearly impossible depending on the distance to the AP - if less than 2-3 meters connecting in rear cases is possible, depending on things like the amount of noise from other nearby WiFi networks.
