today I found it seems NM is logging to /var/log/daemon.log, and I see following message when phone is connected to USB

Sep 30 11:42:41 rsmol-laptop NetworkManager: SCPlugin-Ifupdown: devices added (path: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb5/5-1/5-1:1.2/net/usbpn0, iface: usbpn0)

Yet I am not getting the option ot activate the connection in NM menu. I've seen there is new libnm-util pushed to my machine today, I will restart and retry.
