Comment 19 for bug 414795

This is the gconf setting i mentioned in my previous post. I am posting it here for convenience and in hopes that it helps.

run gconf-editor from terminal and set
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode
to 'off' rather than 'on'

Of course you would do the opposite to turn the sound on.
