I'm glad to confirm that things work as they should with the kernel in -proposed:

linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic:

As you can see, BTN_TOOL_DOUBLETAP and BTN_TOOL_TRIPLETAP (the last two digits) are reported as 0 (instead of 1):
Synaptics Capabilities (290): 1, 1, 1, 0, 0
