Can you comment if this is still an issue for you? The exit status 137 seems to be from the update-grub process being terminated:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-1-generic
Running postinst hook script /usr/sbin/update-grub.
Killed
User postinst hook script [/usr/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 137
dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.31-1-generic (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 137
