Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Today's update to 2.6.31-1 caused my system to fail at startup. Previously reported as bug 394341. The boot sequence was several minutes culminating in a black screen with no keyboard response. I unplugged all devices before trying again. I also tried the recovery mode, but also ended up with a black screen.

I was able to reboot with the 2.6.30-10 kernel.

Possibly this is the same kernel bug that caused bug #394492, esp. since you were able to fix it by downrevving the kernel.

Looking at the bug that Bryce referenced, it seems at least that issue got resolved with the latest (2.6.31-2) kernel. Could you update to that kernel and post whether it fixes your problem as well? Thanks,

I'm not sure if this is the best bug to put this in, but I'm also still getting many, many “unable to read EDID block” messages (and subsequent poor resolution availability unless I fiddle xorg.conf to increase HorizSync), on kernel 2.6.31-10. I.m not convinced the root cause is fixed.

(More specifically, 2.6.31-10.34 on Karmic α6 amd64, on Intel G45, talking over VGA to an LG Flatron 882LE, whose EDID works fine elsewhere... although curiously it did once *temporarily* exhibit the same brokenness under Jaunty.)

@bobince -- that is likely a different issue and should be files separatly.

@Christopher -- did you get a chance to retest with later kernels? We should expect this to be fixed in the current versions. Please test 2.6.31-12.39 or later and report back here.

The laptop recovered with further updates, but my Karmic desktop computer partition did not. It has a built in Intel 945G but runs a Nvidia graphic card GEforce 6200, as the 945G never did like the Acer AL1715 monitor.

I used the GParted live CD to reformat the partition on the desktop computer and reinstalled using the Karmic Beta, now 2.6.31-12.39. There have been no issues since; even the boot - which was a black screen until login - is behaving normally.

I restored all of the applications that were previously on the desktop machine, so that doesn't seem to have been an issue.

As far as retracing the logs, they are gone forever with the reformatting. I just saved my home folder and my-packages.

As this is no longer reproducible by the reporter we shall close it off. I would close it Not Reproducible but we don't have one of those. Will close it Invalid as it really contains no useful information for a following reporter.
