The symptom that you described reads a lot like the volume-knob issue that
Takashi and I covered on the alsa-devel mailing list. It has been fixed
already and is available in the 20091105 stable snapshot (likely earlier,
but I haven't done a bisect).

Not the alsamixer master volume but the
sound preferences volume on the top right
hand side of the Gnome desktop.
I can live with this but it might confuse
