Using the 2.30.3 kernel from the mainline repo., esp. on battery power, I get log entries like:
Aug 17 01:13:04 wopr kernel: [57733.347824] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio2/input0 lost sync at byte 1

Using modprobe to remove and add the psmouse driver restores it to working order.

This didn't happen under stock 9.04 but then my Intel graphics were busted. Kernel bug ? I will try the GRUB option.
