Bah, that's so utterly confusing now. Does arecord work or fail if you stop hal and run "tail -f /proc/asound/card*/pcm*/info /proc/asound/cards" in parallel? That's the *only* thing that hal does wrt. sound devices.

If you say that it is fixed in intrepid, trying the intrepid kernel would really be worthwhile, too. If that helps, maybe we can supply a backported usb sound driver.
