I am still experiencing this too. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T400.
Linux sparky 2.6.27-4-generic #1 SMP Wed Sep 24 01:30:51 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I would try to boot into a 2.6.26 kernel, but it seems like those packages disappeared with some dist-upgrade, and now I can't find them online either.
