I can confirm this as well, for 2.6.17-10-generic. The various logs requested above are attached.
amarok, kaffeine, et al freeze when playing, when sound is broken. Also, running "acpi-utls stop/start" doesn't seem to do anything at all. It requires a reboot to get sound working again.
