On Dell Inspiron 1720, after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid (8.10), I had the same LED blinking issue. However, my wireless adapter is eth1. So, I modified the above script by substituting "wlan0" with "eth1".
It now works fine without the annoying blinking. Thanks!
