Thanks Leann! Took your suggestion and installed the latest kernel (and re-installed usplash and the corresponding ubuntu theme package; I think I already had v86d installed manually before)

As the system went down, got the usual red screen with white bars I saw when I had usplash installed. In any case, was more interested to see what would happen as the system came back up: I didn't get a completely blank screen (instead got a message from a monitor something along the lines of it not supporting that display mode/resolution). But more importantly, proceeded to gdm!!! :)

On another good note, also I'm no longer seeing the VBE-related errors in the dmesg logs
