It is a minipc - Asus PN51-E1, using a laptop class chipset I'd guess. There is no internal display. I forgot to mention I'm on Focal.
based on my rudimentary assessment, this bug was fixed in the latest focal kernel. As this bug report only indicates Jammy, I figured I'd point out I'm using Focal and it seems to have changed behavior (for the better).
I will create a new bug if the crashes/freezes return.
