This problem is probably related to a specific combination of software and it would be useful to know which combination everyone is using. For example I no longer have any issues and I am using:

linux-source-2.6.24: Installed: 2.6.24-16.30
xorg: Installed: 1:7.3+10ubuntu10
VMWare workstation: 6.0.2 build-59824
VMWare workstation tools: 7.2.8 build-59824
