I have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP nx6110 laptop. The boot options mentioned above didn't work.

Checking the CD for errors reported 3 errors. OTOH, I used the very same CD to install Ubuntu on a desktop computer, and there it (eventually) worked. The best I got so far on the laptop is that it starts installing files on the harddisk, and stops at 22% with an I/O error dialog.

I tried to make new burns of the CD, using the computer where 10.04 is installed. The disk with the 3 errors was created with the default CD burning software of Ubuntu, so, for a change, I used k3b for my other attempts. I tried different speeds, and I also tried DAO. The new CDs are even worse than the first one. With the new CDs, the boot manager of the CD-ROM complains that it can't read the CD-ROM, as soon as I press enter on an option like 'install Ubuntu'.
