Probably this error messages is caused by a variety of errors, that may be unrelated. I myself just experienced this issue with a downloaded iso; I burnt the cd and tried booting it in two different drives but had the SQUASHFS and Buffer I/O errors. I threw the CD in the trash basket and burnt the same iso to a new CD, and that time it worked.

However, I see in other bugs, others have reported the same error messages but it seems to be something other than bad media:

#200688 - when libdvdcss is not installed
#120389 - misdetected drive
#135094 - stalling due to missing floppy drive
#94119 - misdetected drive
#187807 - Some sort of DMA problem, only affects reading CD's

I have a gut feeling that bug #110636 might have something to do with at least some of these bugs, but no solid clue.
