I tried on another machine with 2.6.22-14-, both 386 & generic, and Matrox G400. More less the same problem, except that once KDM starts, trying to switch to tty[1-6] gives me the KDM background image instead of a black screen, but all during init it's all black.
vesafb does not show up in lsmod output. fbcon and matrox_w1 do.
When I do modprobe vesafb manually in Konsole, I get the ttys video working. Alternatively, I can switch to a tty, login blindly, and modprobe vesafb there for the same result.
