More info: To test this further, I tried booting under the old feisty kernel which I fortunately hadn't removed yet.

Linux zd7000 2.6.20-16-386 #2 Thu Jun 7 20:16:13 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Under this kernel, the wireless card still works great: I'm back to 400kB/s and better transmission rates. Night and Day.
